Gift cards have taken the world by storm. Some people love em, some dont. Me personally a bad gift is a bad gift. I have be given gift cards from stores that are not even in my country, let alone in my neighbourhood. However, I have received good ones too!!
Remeber, once upon a time, we use to put cash in an envelope? We were told it was "taboo" a "thoughtless" gift.at best. (Personally, I have no problem with cash LOL). But seriously, what is the difference? In giving cash, the recipient can spent it however and wherever they want. But on the other hand, will they spend it on a gift for themselves, or will they pay bills with it and forget it?
I have researched this topic for a while now, and truly, the people that like gift cards vs. those who hate them are pretty well equal.
Some have admitted to giving gift cards because they are too lazy to shop for anything else. Yikes!! Some people have said that the gift card is for the giver, not the recipient. It saves them time and headaches, trying to shop for that perfect gift.
To Be Or Not To Be - I think gift cards are here to stay. I think the trick to perfect gift giving, whether it be gift cards or gift baskets is to know your recipient. What foods or restaurants do they like, do they like movies, do they like or play sports, etc.
Hey, what happened to that old saying, "Its the thought that counts"?
Please leave a comment and let me know... Do you like receiving gift cards?
It true, that it is the thought that counts, but where is the thought in a plain gift card. Meaning one of those that the recipient has no use for..they either don't shop at the place they got it for or have no use for the product at the location.
ReplyDeleteI for one hate giving or receiving gift cards. I only send them when I have exhausted myself searching for the gift I truly want to give or have run out of time and money in the search for it. But even then I know what gift card to give and to who it would best suit. You can't just grab a gift card from where ever and assume the person your giving it to would actually use it.
I have allowed plenty gift cards go to waste for the reasons that the giver didn't know. Seeing how I'm by no means a reader, so a $20 gift card for Coles books is at best used as a place holder in my already over-sized wallet or a coaster for my coffee mug.On the other hand if that was a $20 gift card for one of my favorite places to shop or any where with something that could be of use to me. Then it would turn out to me a great gift where I at least know the person cares enough to think about the person who is receiving and what they might want or need.
With all that I have said, I do truly believe that gift cards are by far one of the worst gifts you could give, since most don't care to think about the receiver and only the convenience it will be to themselves.
I really don't like gift cards.. I'd rather have the cash. Lol. Although I would rather have a gift card than a gift I wouldn't use, I usually end up trading my gift cards for cash if I don't shop there. I think some people get gift cards because it's easier for them, but at the same time if it's for a shop they normally go to, then it's not too bad of a gift.
ReplyDeleteFinally someone who I can relate to! Everyone in my family buys/receives gift cards. I say, if someone requests gift cards/money as a gift then go ahead. I on the other hand feel that there is no thought put into gift cards. I personally enjoy watching my family/friend open a gift that I have seeked out and put thought into. There is nothing better than surprising someone with a gift (whether they asked for it or not). I can honestly say some of the best gifts I have received/given did not consist of money or gift cards. On the other hand, there are times that I wish my grandparents have given me a gift card and not a knitted sweater of some kittens playing with yarn but hey - it's the thought that counts right?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Amy - it's better to have the felxibility of the gift cad f the person is simply not in tune with giving you a menaingful gift - a lazy gift is worse than a gift card anyday. in saying that - nothing quite compares to the sheer ecstasy of a fruit basket delivery on your special day.
DeleteI think gift card have become increasingly popular as they relieve the donor of selecting a specific gift.

ReplyDeleteI am perfectly fine with getting gift cards. My wife has been looking at gift basket companies to see if that's what she wants to give out this year. But, we've usually done gift cards. I think they're just great as long as it's for a place they'd be interested in shopping at.
ReplyDeleteIs that true? I was looking for such a thing to help me better
